The CompuServe Masonry Forum
Traveling Trowel
The Traveling Trowel originated on the CompuServe Masonic Forum, with the intention
that it would pass from one member of the Forum to the next, and in doing so travel around
the world. A trowel was chosen because
"The Trowel is an instrument used by operative Masons to spread the cement which
united the building into one common mass. But we as Free and Accepted Masons are taught to
make use of it for the more noble and glorious purpose of spreading the cement of
brotherly love and affection; that cement which unites us into one sacred band or society
of friends and brothers among whom no contention should ever exist but that noble
contention or rather emulation, of who best can work and best agree."
The first entry in the register that accompanies the trowel on its journey reads
12/4/95
Brethren,
May this trowel cement the bonds of friendship and of Brotherly Love between all
Masons. As it sets out on its journeys, recall "how good it is for brethren to dwell
together in unity."
Since starting its travels on the East coast of the US, it has been to many States, and
many countries around the world. It was presented to the first Master of Internet Lodge on
10/10/98, at the fourth regular meeting of the Lodge in Dore (near Sheffield, UK), having
travelled from Prague, Czechoslovakia via Brussels, Belgium. One week later it was sent on
its way again, destination New Jersey...
We wish it well on its way.
